Look beyond total climbing
Distance alone can hide steep gradients, junctions and traffic. Inspect the elevation profile, descents, bends and safe stopping options.
Make your test ride specific
Describe your usual climbs, luggage and current difficulties. Compare low-speed control, shifting and braking feel on the actual build rather than counting gears.
Keep a return margin
Start with a short daylight ride in stable weather. Identify breaks and turn-back points. Walk or return early when a gradient, traffic or surface exceeds your comfort.
